How to Grieve
Reilly Browning
Walk away from the fresh dirt,
Ignore the rain fall.
Climb into your car,
Listen to the static filled air,

Turn the ignition and drive.
Climb in bed still dressed,
Ignore the cold sheets,
Scold yourself for your empty eyes.

Watch three months fly by in a blur.
Ask yourself why them,
Try to remember.
Notice you still haven’t cried yet.

Drive different ways to work.
Avoid the grave site.
Go to a café.
A new one, ten minutes away.

Ignore the constant phone calls.
Forget your laundry,
Step over the mess.

Ask people why you’re still so angry.

Let three more months blur passed you.
Forget their kind voice.
Wake up one morning,
Notice that you can breathe again.

Put on their favorite shoes
Climb into your car,
Stop the static waves,
Sing along to the soft music.

Freeze at the graveyard gates,
Drag your feet through mud.
Look down at their name,
Feel the tears finally pooling.
